Maria was sent to serve the Church by her parents, who were troubled by her overly independent and free-willed nature.

Although their intentions were to guide her along a strict path of obedience and conformity, Maria fails to suppress her true self, causing disruptions the church could do without. Eventually, she is ordered to accompany Clement on his mission trip, where she will embark on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.
